Fethiye Fashions

Just to change things up a little, here's something for the girls - the first 'outfit post'!  I just threw on a little something before we went out for an awesome dinner, so here goes...

My favourite new item of clothing from Turkey is my tassle-y vest by Bershka. Purchased it in Istanbul, but they appear to have shops everywhere and are also online. Love it. Shoes also from Bershka.  Acid wash crop top from one of my absolute favourites - Urban Outfitters, as is the skirt.  Tan is (mostly) from Turkey.

A Beautiful Little Spot on the Aegean - Fethiye

Backtracking a little bit from yesterday's slightly disastrous day, here are pictures from our first day in Fethiye!

Fethiye is a beautiful little town in the bottom left (south-west) of Turkey, not nearly as busy or expensive as Bodrum, and really chilled out and great.  We spent our first afternoon and evening here just wandering around the town, Chewy had an apparently delicious vegetarian kebab, and we marvelled at the sculpted greenery by the harbour as you'll see in the pictures below! In the evening we walked up to the old castle ruins on the hill, from where we had a lovely view over the town at night.

How wicked does this little guy look?! Definitely want to get some of these to send back to friends in Perth.

12 Islands Boat Cruise/ Epic Fail

I was really excited about writing today's post because we did this amazing island tour just off the coast of Fethiye.  Unfortunately for both you and I, my camera now resides here...

So all the pictures for the next while won't be of great quality, and these are the few pictures we did manage to take today (post camera debacle).

We swam at 4 different locations, all were beautiful. We were fed a delicious lunch, had stacks of watermelon, and just a really tip top day in the sun. My tan lines are off the chart.  The lesson of not letting yourself be owned by your possessions really rang true today, and although it did put a slight dampener on things for the 5 or so minutes after it happened, I didn't let it ruin my day.  Chewy did try to get it back from the ocean floor by the way, but the water was much too deep and way too blue to be able to see anything unfortunately! So no luck there.  But in the end it is just a replaceable item, and I won't be eating for the next couple of months to try and save money, in the already tight travelling budget of $50 per day, in order to buy a new camera.  #Panasonic if you're reading this, I really liked your camera, so how would you feel about sending me a new one?

Bodrum is Full of Tourists

Our trip to Bodrum was short lived, we spent less than 24 hours there.  Good thing that.  Beautiful town and gorgeous blue sky, but full of tourists, and incredibly expensive. We're talking 'Perth prices'.  So we went to the only bit of the beach that's free to go to, became mates with a fairly large dog that used us for our towels and stomach rubs, and then left the next morning to come to Fethiye.  Unless you're willing to fork out big bucks, I'd recommend bypassing this tourist-filled city and heading straight to Fethiye or elsewhere along the coast.

Troy

We were pretty excited to visit Troy, near Canakkale, and booked ourselves a day tour there.  Excitement quickly wore off in the heat and dust, and also partly due to some other individuals in our tour group.  And also because of the lady who nearly took my eye out with her sun umbrella, only to get it caught in my hair and keep walking even though I said "ow" loudly in her ear quite a few times.  As for the other individuals, ever wanted to spend hours on a bus with some middle aged ladies sporting hair extensions, fake nails, horrible east coast Australian accents, incredibly large handbags, and have them share their life stories with another couple on the bus, and therefore by default yourself because their voices are loud and carry all the way down the bus? Awesome.

Troy is touted as one of Turkey's best tourist attractions, and unfortunately it is just that, an overblown tourist attraction.  Schliemann did a great job of taking anything of worth out of Troy when he hunted for the famous, ancient city back in the day, and so all you see today are some ruins (that don't even come close to how magnificent other ancient cities in Turkey are), a rebuilt bit of wall, and busloads of other tourists.

I couldn't help myself, and had to get a photo with a replica Trojan horse! The original Trojan horse from the movie 'Troy' stands in the Canakkale town square by the way, free for everyone to see.

I am glad we went to see Troy as I would have forever had a fear that I'd missed out on something, but it's not a place I'd recommend anyone else to go necessarily.  There are much more beautiful ruins around, more on those in upcoming posts.  Anyway, here are just a couple of pictures for you to ponder over, enjoy!

Pamukkale, Turkey

We're currently lucky enough to be in the completely bizarre yet totally amazing location of Pamukkale in Turkey.  An easy and short (3.5 hours) bus ride away from Izmir, Turkey's third largest city, Pamukkale is one of the main tourist attractions in Turkey.  This didn't put us off, and we had an absolute ball this morning playing in the water of the travertines and the ruins of Hierapolis for 5 solid hours.  Tan: check.

We were completely snap happy today and did just about every tacky tourist pose we could think of.  The water in the travertines is supposed to be really good for you, full of calcium and other minerals, so we swam in it for as long as possible and had a great old time.  Enjoy the pictures!

A flower bed is as good a place as any for a nap. Happy Saturday!

Siquijor, the Voodoo Capital of the Philippines

After our fairly quick trip to the rice terraces of northern Luzon, we caught a bus, a plane and a ferry to the island of Siquijor, in the Visayas.  Much further south in the Philippines, we were pretty excited for the weather to be a bit warmer and to enjoy some beach time on this beautiful, peaceful little island.

As soon as we arrived it was pretty obvious to us that life here follows a much slower place than elsewhere.  So we spent 3 days driving around the island on our hired motorbike, simple enough a task when driving around the entire island only takes half a day.  We got lost once in the mountains, and spent several hours driving around with no real idea of where we were or how to get out.  But it was all an experience!

We stayed at the incredibly chilled out JJ's Backpackers, which also had a restaurant right on the beach front that served delicious meals in large portions. We both loved JJ's, met some great people here, and had everything right on our doorstep.

Along the way we found several adorable animals, some great food, lovely little beaches, gorgeous waterfalls, and beautiful scenery all round. Stellar holiday destination!
